About Saurashtra University
Introduction
Saurashtra University was established on 23 May 1967 under the Saurashtra University Act, 1965 (Gujarat Act No. 39 of 1965) following the long-standing demand of educationists and freedom fighters for a separate university after the formation of the State of Gujarat in 1960. Initially, the University functioned with two headquarters at Rajkot and Bhavnagar. After the establishment of Bhavnagar University, Rajkot became the sole headquarters.
Spread across 363 acres, Saurashtra University serves the districts of Rajkot, Jamnagar, Amreli, Surendranagar, and Morbi. The University has 29 postgraduate departments, 285 affiliated colleges, and 1 autonomous college. R. Ambedkar Chair, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chair, Swami Dayanand Saraswati Chair, and Gulabdas Broker Chair, along with the Shri Zaverchand Meghani Lok Sahitya Kendra, dedicated to literature and cultural research.
The University established the National Facility for Drug Discovery (NFDD) in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat and the Government of India, which later evolved into a Centre of Excellence (COE) for advanced research and industrial consultancy. Saurashtra University has published 38 patents, secured 22 granted patents, and maintains 64 national and international MoUs, reflecting its strong research ecosystem and global collaborations.
Renowned for academic excellence, sports, and cultural activities, the University regularly organizes youth festivals, national sports events, job fairs, and cultural programs. It has earned recognition for outstanding student achievements in national-level sports competitions. Saurashtra University was the first conventional State University in Gujarat to receive NAAC ‘A’ Grade accreditation and continues to maintain high standards through its Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).
Committed to sustainability, the University has developed eco-friendly infrastructure with check dams, 34 rooftop solar power installations generating 670 kW, and more than 5,000 trees across its campus.
