Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (formerly known as NTR University of Health Sciences) is one of India’s premier health sciences universities, dedicated exclusively to medical education, healthcare, and research. Established in 1986, the university was founded under the visionary leadership of N. T. Rama Rao, who recognized the need for a specialized institution to regulate and enhance medical education in Andhra Pradesh.
Located in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, the university serves as the affiliating authority for numerous medical, dental, nursing, AYUSH, physiotherapy, and allied health sciences colleges across the state. It was inaugurated in 1986, and the first Chancellor of the university was the late N. T. Rama Rao. At present, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh serves as the Chancellor of the university.
The university was established through Act No. 6 of 1986 with the objective of improving the quality of medical education and healthcare services. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, super-specialty, doctoral, nursing, dental, and allied health science programs while ensuring high academic standards, research excellence, and ethical healthcare practices.
As the first Health Sciences University in India, the institution has played a significant role in standardizing medical education, promoting scientific research, and producing highly skilled healthcare professionals.
